e-Filing Options for Individuals & Businesses

What to Know Before e-Filing
One important step before e-filing is knowing you’ll be asked about a previous year’s taxes.
If this is your first time preparing taxes, you might need to file the old fashion way, get an accountant, or do it yourself to get caught up with your previous years’ taxes.
e-File Form 2290
Also known as, Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return. This tax applies to both individuals and companies, depending on whose name is the heavy vehicle registered.
Visit the 2290 Modernized e-File (MeF) Providers page on the IRS website to find authorized filers or contact us.
Where to e-File for Businesses
Find authorized e-File providers for businesses at Approved IRS Modernized e-File (MeF) Business Providers.
If your businesses and/or corporations have assets of +$10 million or do +250 returns, you’re required to e-file Form 1020 and 1020S for years 2017 forward. Read e-file for Large Business and International (LB&I).

Where to e-File for Individuals
The IRS provides four different options on their page, e-File Options for Individuals who wish to e-file.
They give you the option to use the free file option or fillable forms, use a free tax preparation site, use commercial software, or to find an authorized e-File Provider.

Where to Find Free File or Fillable Forms
Free filing is for people who make less than $66,000/year. A number of companies provide free filing software like TaxSlayer and H&R Block but you can find the full list in the Free File Software Offers from the IRS.
Fillable forms are for people who make more than $66,000/year. You can start your free fillable form with Free File. Note that Free File closes on October 20, 2019. After that, you won’t be able to access your account or review any information at all.
Use a Free Tax Preparation Site
There’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) and TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly) programs. Read more about Free Tax Return Preparation for Qualifying Taxpayers.
You can find VITA and TCE sites at your local community centers, schools, libraries, etc., or call (800) 906-9887.
All TCE sites are operated by the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program. Find an AARP location near you.
Commercial Software Available to the Public
Commercial software means using QuickBooks, TaxSlayer, and other online filing software. Most of this software provides great alternatives to getting an accountant but if you want to maximize the amount of your refund and prevent errors, we recommend talking to a professional tax accountant.
Go to the E-File with Commercial Tax Prep Software, to read what the IRS has to say about doing, filing, and paying your taxes.
Where to Find an Authorized e-File Provider
Search through a nationwide directory of every business that’s been accepted in the IRS e-File program. Authorized IRS e-file Provider Locator Service For Tax Professionals.
If you have doubts about e-Filing taxes yourself or with commercial software, you can find an authorized provider, who is qualified to e-File.
Check Your Refund at an IRS Approved Website
You can check your refund status from the Where’s My Refund page. You’ll need to know your Social Security Number, your filing status, and the amount of your refund to obtain the status of your refund.
